Ja-In Kim and Ramon Julian Puigblanque rule in Puurs

Last Saturday, Belgium only narrowly missed out on having someone representing the country in the finals of the now traditional Belgian leg of the World Cup lead. Not Mathilde Brumagne, who had to withdraw because of her physical condition, but Anak Verhoeven finished as the highest ranked Belgian. On Friday, everything seemed to be in Anak’s favor. After a obtaining a 9th place in the qualifications, she was eager to climb in the semis in front of her own audience. Yesterday morning, a slight hesitation in the second part of the route dashed hopes of a repeat of her top performance a day earlier. Ultimately, she was ranked 15th, a solid result after only half a season on the senior international circuit.
On the men’s side, Loïc Timmermans led the Belgian delegation. He misinterpreted a sequence and fell way too early in the semi-final route. His route was estimated at 8b+. He finished ranked 24th.

In the finals, Ja-In Kim (KOR) and Ramon Julian Puigblanque (SPA) demonstrated their mastery encouraged by hundreds of onlookers. This victory puts them in a position to win the overall World Cup rankings. The anticlimax of the evening was the disqualification of Jakob Schubert, following a red card because he used a cell phone during isolation. He consequently lost all World Cup points for this competition, not only losing points in the final. The rules are the rules, but it was nonetheless shocking, not only for him but also for the other finalists and the audience.
