Great Trango Towers

August 5 1999,

A 3,000-foot cliff is considered a really big wall - like El Capitán in Yosemite. THIS THING IS TWICE AS BIG AS THAT...

Content

Great Trango Towers in the Karakoram (Pakistan) is sometimes called the last unclimbed big wall in the world. The website with the same name tells the story of people that want to free the towers of their name and status.

Pictures, real-audio clips and videos, diagrams, reports... take the visitor along with an expedition, from early june to their return in august 1999.
The site provides information on the project, area info, the difficulty of the climb and even the way the site itself is updated.
Rather funny is their way of visualising heights (a giraffe is still a dwarf compared to Godzilla, who is smaller than ...).

My opinion

Great Trango Towers is a very complete website, plenty of time is needed to explore the whole site (that even contains a huge climbing-dictionnary). To set up the site, a large media-circus traveled along the to base camp of the expedition.
Navigation the site is not always easy. If you are surfing with a screen resolution less than 800x600, you won't see some elements of the pages and will surely miss a lot.

The navigation tree is filled with small photographs and is not very intuitive (eg. the equipment section).
The lay-out is clear and invites the surfer to further explore the site. Sometimes essential words on a page are in larger font, so it is easy to see on what page you are ... Sometimes the lay-out of the pages is very different. As a result, navigating the site is rahter difficult.

Conclusion

Great Trango Towers is a very complete website: you'll have to search a lot to find an expedition site with a similar quality. Despite the minor inconveniences, it is worth a visit.
Have a look yourself: Great Trango Towers
