The Mountain Comes Online

Maarten

Introduction

MNET is a website like many others ... or perhaps not?
Everone knows mountainzone.com: interviews, stories, competition results, gear tests... MNET tries to do the same thing, but on a smaller scale, with less commercial impact and at least as interesting as The Mountainzone.
It is not my task to put well known sites in the spotlight, so I went looking for a climb-e-zine that deserves our attention ... an almost impossible quest: the better sites are already well known, others were not updated since 2 years ... untill I discoverd MNET: a rather young website (about one year online) - edited by some young enthousiasts - with qualities, comparable to the big ones.

Content

MNET is an Italian website, managed in Italian and in English. As a result, the Italian version is more stuffed up than the English version ... but don't panic, MNET has got enough interesting content to explore.
All elements that make up a good climb-e-zine are present: interviews, competition results, stories, regional climbing information (including topo's!), gear tests... MNET even adds real-video's.
The website is split up into four major sections: ROCK, ICE, SNOW and TREKKING, every climber/mountain hiker will find his preferred section in it.

My opinion

As told before: smaller than other well known websites, but still very interesting due to the good choice of featured topics.
The site may feature ROCK, ICE, SNOW en TREKKING.... only rock climbers will bookmark the site: the other sections are too small and the TREKKING-part is really tiny.
Navigation is clear, rather rare at e-zines...., the size of the site surely plays part in this. Graphically the site is very nice, 1/4 of the editors is working on lay-out, resulting in an attractive site, really worth a visit.
