Montrail does not produce only climbing shoes. It is even mostly known for its trail running shoes in mountain. I was proposed to test the new Java Gore-Tex® XCR®, and I accepted the invitation with much enthusiasm.

Light, the Java is what one calls a shoe 4x4. Choose another model if you want to do some trekking. It is ideal for a one day excursions or a weekend. To be honest it has the advantages of a trekking shoe without the disadvantages related to their weight. In short I said to myself that a one day excursion in the Belgian Ardennes would be enough to have a good opinion. And despite the ground not very undulating composed of dirt tracks and rocks next to the Lesse, the feelings were rather positive.

One should not be a soothsayer to conclude that this is due to the coating in Gore-Tex® XCR® of the Java. We know that the impermeability and the ventilation are higher than in the other fabrics. Result, at the end of the afternoon, any trace of moisture, any blister and any odor unpleasant to announce. Considering I had only one pair of shoes, I did not push the vice until plunging them in the Lesse to test their waterproofness. The weather was unfortunately splendid and it is not fault of having hoped for the rain. Only the poor morning dew offered me the occasion to try them on a wet ground. It quickly evaporated without leaving traces on the shoes.

Considering the grip, the sole sticks, is adhesive and it is all that we ask it. The theory says that it is oddly made up of two types of rubber. Once more it is difficult to appreciate on this ground? The Gryptonite GS sole on the front is supposed to ensure more friction on the rock and the Gryptonite WP sole on the side and in lower part of the heel generates an unequalled traction. Ok? I could occasionally test them on snow and it holds, even on strongly inclined slopes. However, the model isn?t supposed to be for this type of ground.

Concerning the comfort, not much place for the toes. I advise you nevertheless a good pair of socks to make the effects of the hull on the front and on the back disappear. It is particularly rigid but ensures a good bearing of the foot.
If we had to find an inconvenient, it would be the absence of a loop at the back for the fingers? of the hands.

In short, a good 4x4 model at a relatively democratic price considering the fabrication in Gore-tex®.
